Michelle O'Bama

On Monday the first lady visited Haiti. She was joined by Jill Biden, the wife of the vice president. This was O'Bama's first trip abroad without Barack, since his election. White House officials decided not to announce her plans, because of security concerns in earthquake ravaged Haiti. The visit was important as the relief efforts continue, but the world's attention is mainly focused elsewhere.

I was first surprised when I heard this news. Like many others have, I basically forgot about the situation in Haiti. It is important for people to continue to help Haiti relief efforts if they can. Mrs. O'Bama and Mrs. Biden realize that it is their responsibility to be a role model and a public figure. This speaks a lot to their character. It is good that the first lady is still trying to help those in need, although many people may have been focusing their attention somewhere other than Haiti.
